Configure CleanBrowsing DNS on Any Router

Learn how to configure CleanBrowsing DNS on any router. These generic instructions will work for most router brands and models, allowing you to enable content filtering across your entire network.

Step 1: Access Your Router Admin Panel

First, access your router's administrative panel. It's generally located at the same IP address as your network gateway. Common addresses include:

To find your gateway IP on Mac, open Terminal and run:

netstat -nr | grep '^default'

On Windows, open Command Prompt and run:

ipconfig | findstr /i "Gateway"

Log in with your administrator credentials.

Step 2: Configure DNS Settings

Locate your network connection settings. This may be labeled "WAN Settings," "Connection Settings," or "Internet." Find the DNS server options and enter the following CleanBrowsing DNS addresses:

  • Primary DNS: 185.228.168.168
  • Secondary DNS: 185.228.169.168

Note: If you have a paid CleanBrowsing plan, use the DNS IPs provided in your dashboard instead.

Step 3: Save Changes

Click on "Apply" or "Save" to save your changes. The system may require several minutes to refresh DHCP settings. You can force an update by disabling and re-enabling your WiFi connection.

Step 4: Verify Configuration

Test your configuration by visiting badexample.com — you should see a "domain not found" error, confirming the filter is active.

For a comprehensive check, use DNS Leak Test to verify your DNS settings are being applied correctly.

Allow 10-15 minutes for changes to take full effect across your network.
