What is a DNS Leak?

A DNS leak occurs when your DNS queries are sent to servers outside your intended DNS provider, such as your ISP's resolvers. This exposes your browsing activity even if you've configured a private DNS service.

If you've set up CleanBrowsing DNS but see your ISP's resolvers below, your DNS is leaking and your filtering may not be active.

How to Fix DNS Leaks
  • Use DNS over HTTPS (DoH) or DNS over TLS (DoT) to encrypt your DNS queries and prevent leaks.
  • Configure DNS at the router level so all devices on your network are protected.
  • On Apple devices, install a DNS configuration profile for system-wide encrypted DNS.
  • On Windows, disable Smart Multi-Homed Name Resolution which can leak DNS to your ISP.
  • In Chrome/Edge, check that Secure DNS is set to your preferred provider, not "automatic".
