How to Create Block Pages with CleanBrowsing

CleanBrowsing allows paid users to create custom block pages. Customize what users see when a domain is blocked — from the default NXDOMAIN response to fully branded custom pages.

Step 1: Default Block Behavior

By default, all blocks return an NXDOMAIN response, which tells the browser the domain does not exist. This is functional but not always intuitive for end users.

To improve the experience, CleanBrowsing provides every paid user the ability to customize the block page. The features available depend on your plan.

Step 2: Block Page Options

There are four ways to handle blocked domains:

TypeDescription
NXDOMAINThe browser will think the site does not exist. This is the default behavior.
CleanBrowsing Block PageA branded CleanBrowsing page explaining the site has been blocked.
IP RedirectionRedirect the response to any IP address you control, where you can host your own custom block page.
URL RedirectionRedirect the block page to any URL you control.

Step 3: Advanced Custom Pages

Advanced options (available on higher-tier plans) allow you to:

  • Redirect to your own URL: Point blocked requests to any page you control.
  • Redirect to your own IP: Host a custom block page on your own server.
  • Customize page elements: Modify various elements on the CleanBrowsing block page to match your branding.
