How to Group Devices with Profiles

As a paid customer you can create unique Profiles on your account to group devices, networks, or locations under different filter rules. This guide shows you how to create and configure profiles.

Step 1: Understanding How Profiles Work

Profiles are a simple way to group devices, networks, or locations to a specific filter. For example, a common use case might be a Parent and Child profile.

The Parent profile might have unfettered access to the network, while the Child profile has more restricted access. Each profile is assigned a unique DNS IP, which allows the network owner to apply specific rules to users on each profile.

Your plan size will dictate how many profiles you can create.

Step 2: Create a New Profile

Creating a profile usually occurs after the initial service configuration. Navigate to the Profiles settings page in your dashboard.

  • Default Profile: Every account has one default profile that cannot be removed.
  • New Profile: Type in the name of the profile you want (e.g., "Kids", "Guest Network") and click Create new profile.
  • DNS IPs: Each new profile gets its own unique DNS IP addresses.

Step 3: Bind a Public IP to the Profile

Similar to the initial setup process, a public IP needs to be bound to the DNS IPs assigned to the profile. These DNS IPs are shared; binding the public IP tells the system what filters to apply to what requests.

  1. Navigate to the Your Network settings page
  2. Make sure you're working on the right profile by using the profile selector at the top-right, under the profile image
  3. Your public IP will be auto-detected: "Your current IP address is: x.x.x.x"
  4. Type the provided IP into the input box and click Add IP Address or Domain Name
  5. Confirm the binding on the Profiles settings page

Step 4: Tune Filter Rules for Each Profile

You have granular control of the filters for each profile. Whether working with the Categories and Filters page or the Custom Domains page, always make sure to select the correct profile first using the profile selector.

Each profile can have completely independent filter settings — different content categories blocked, different custom domain rules, and different schedule configurations.
