How to Remove CleanBrowsing from Your Network or Device

Need to remove CleanBrowsing? This guide covers how to restore default DNS settings on your browser, device, or router.

Step 1: Identify Where CleanBrowsing Was Configured

CleanBrowsing can be set up at different levels. Check which applies to you:

  • Browser level: DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) configured in Chrome, Firefox, or Edge
  • Device level: DNS settings changed on Windows, macOS, Android, or iOS
  • Router level: DNS configured on your router (affects all devices on the network)

If you're unsure, start with Step 7 (Verify) to check which DNS you're currently using.

Step 2: Remove from Browser

Google Chrome

  1. Navigate to chrome://settings/security
  2. Find "Use secure DNS"
  3. Switch to "With your current service provider" or toggle it off

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Navigate to about:preferences#general
  2. Scroll to Network Settings and click Settings
  3. Uncheck "Enable DNS over HTTPS"

Microsoft Edge

  1. Navigate to edge://settings/privacy
  2. Find "Use secure DNS"
  3. Switch to "Use your current service provider" or toggle it off

Step 3: Remove from Windows

  1. Open Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center
  2. Click Change adapter settings on the left
  3. Right-click your network connection and select Properties
  4. Double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
  5. Select "Obtain DNS server address automatically"
  6. Repeat for Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) if configured
  7. Click OK and close all windows

Step 4: Remove from macOS

  1. Open System Settings (or System Preferences on older versions)
  2. Go to Network
  3. Select your active connection (Wi-Fi or Ethernet)
  4. Click Details (or Advanced)
  5. Go to the DNS tab
  6. Remove the CleanBrowsing IP addresses (185.228.168.168, 185.228.169.168, etc.)
  7. Click OK and then Apply

Step 5: Remove from Mobile Devices

Android (9+)

  1. Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Private DNS
  2. Set to "Off" or "Automatic"

iOS / iPadOS

  1. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi
  2. Tap the (i) icon next to your network
  3. Tap Configure DNS and set to "Automatic"
  4. If a profile was installed, go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management and remove the CleanBrowsing profile

Step 6: Remove from Router

  1. Access your router admin panel (typically 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1)
  2. Navigate to the DNS settings (often under WAN, Internet, or DHCP settings)
  3. Remove the CleanBrowsing IP addresses (e.g., 185.228.168.168 and 185.228.169.168)
  4. Either leave the DNS fields blank (to use your ISP's default) or enter an alternative like Google DNS (8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4)
  5. Save and reboot the router

Step 7: Verify Removal

After making changes, confirm CleanBrowsing is no longer active:

  1. Clear your DNS cache — see our DNS cache clearing guide
  2. Visit our DNS Leak Test and run a test
  3. CleanBrowsing servers should no longer appear in the results
Note: DNS changes can take a few minutes to propagate. If CleanBrowsing still appears, try clearing your browser cache and restarting your device.
