Change DNS on NordVPN

Learn how to configure CleanBrowsing custom DNS servers within the NordVPN desktop application. Maintain content filtering protection while using your VPN connection.

Step 1: Open Settings

Open the NordVPN desktop application and navigate to the Settings page by clicking the gear icon in the top right corner of the app.

Step 2: Open Advanced Options

In the Settings page, click on the Advanced section to expand additional configuration options, including DNS settings.

Step 3: Enable Custom DNS

Find the Custom DNS option and toggle it to ON. This allows you to specify your own DNS servers instead of using NordVPN's default DNS.

Step 4: Enter DNS Addresses

Select "Set a DNS server address" and enter the CleanBrowsing DNS values:

  • Primary DNS: 185.228.168.168
  • Secondary DNS: 185.228.169.168

Note: These are the free Family Filter DNS addresses. If you have a paid CleanBrowsing plan, use the DNS IPs provided in your dashboard instead.

Step 5: Restart VPN Connection

Stop and restart your VPN connection for the DNS changes to take effect. The new CleanBrowsing DNS servers will be used for all DNS queries while connected to NordVPN.
