Change DNS on the Hitron CGNM 2250 Router

Changing the DNS the Hitron router (CGNM 2250 or similar versions) is pretty simple. This router is used by Shaw.ca, Virgin and some other ISPs. In the following steps, we will show you how to change DNS in there to enable the free parental control filters provided by CleanBrowsing:

Step 1: Login to your router administrative panel

First, go to http://192.168.0.1. The default admin username is cusadmin and the password is at the back of the router (for Shaw customers, you can find the default password printed on the white sticker on your Shaw wireless modem – referred to as the Passphrase).

Step 2: DNS Settings

After you login, look for the “Basic Settings”, followed by a tab called “DNS”. Click in there and switch your DNS from Automatic to Manual. You should see a page like this one:

Change the Primary DNS1 to 185.228.168.168 and the DNS2 to 185.228.169.168. If you are using one of our paid plans, change the two IP addresses for the ones we provide in your dashboard. We also have less restrictive free filters available that you can use.

Step 3: Saving your changes

Once you are done changing the DNS, just click on “Save Changes”. That will save your changes and you are done.

It may take a few minutes for your computer DHCP Lease to get the new DNS, but you should be good to go. If you disable your Wifi and re-enable, it will force it right away. To test, try to visit badexample.com and you should be blocked (getting domain not founder error on your browser).
