How to Remove CleanBrowsing from Your Network or Device

CleanBrowsing is a DNS-based filtering service that provides a safer internet experience by blocking unwanted or harmful content. If you’re looking to remove CleanBrowsing from your setup, the steps depend on how it was originally configured. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the different areas to check and the steps you can take to remove or revert to your default DNS settings.

⚠️ Important: You must have administrator access to make changes to DNS settings on your device or network.

Step 1: Identify Where CleanBrowsing Was Configured

CleanBrowsing can be configured in one or more of the following places:

  • Browser-level (e.g., DoH settings in Chrome or Firefox)
  • Local Device settings (Windows, macOS, Android, iOS)
  • Router or Gateway settings (network-wide filtering)

You’ll need to review each area to ensure it’s completely removed.

Step 2: Remove from Browser Settings

Google Chrome

If CleanBrowsing was configured via DoH in Chrome:

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Go to chrome://settings/security.
  3. Scroll to Use secure DNS.
  4. If it’s enabled and set to a custom provider (e.g., https://doh.cleanbrowsing.org/...), switch it back to:
    • “With your current service provider” or
    • Disable secure DNS entirely.

Firefox

  1. Open Firefox.
  2. Go to about:preferences#general → scroll to Network Settings.
  3. Click Settings…
  4. Uncheck Enable DNS over HTTPS, or switch the provider to your preferred one.

Step 3: Remove from Local Device Settings

Windows

  1. Open Control PanelNetwork and InternetNetwork and Sharing Center.
  2. Click on Change adapter settings.
  3. Right-click your active connection and select Properties.
  4. Double-click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
  5. Set Obtain DNS server address automatically.
  6. Repeat for Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) if applicable.

macOS

  1. Open System Settings or System PreferencesNetwork.
  2. Select your active connection and click Details or Advanced.
  3. Navigate to the DNS tab.
  4. Remove CleanBrowsing IPs.
  5. Click OK and then Apply.

Android

⚠️ Android DNS changes are usually app-based or require developer settings

If CleanBrowsing was installed using a DNS or DoH app:

  • Open the app and disable or uninstall it.
  • If DNS was set manually:
    • Go to SettingsNetwork & InternetPrivate DNS.
    • Set to Off or Automatic.

iOS (iPhone / iPad)

  • Go to SettingsWi-Fi.
  • Tap the i next to your network.
  • Scroll to Configure DNS → Set to Automatic.
  • If a DNS profile was installed:
    • Go to SettingsGeneralVPN & Device Management.
    • Remove any installed profiles related to CleanBrowsing.

Step 4: Remove from Router Settings

If CleanBrowsing was configured at the router, follow these steps:

  1. Log into your router (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1).
  2. Look for DNS Settings under WAN, LAN, or Internet settings.
  3. Replace CleanBrowsing DNS IPs (185.228.168.168, 185.228.169.168, etc.) with:
    • Automatic / ISP-provided DNS or
    • Another DNS provider (e.g., Google DNS 8.8.8.8, Cloudflare 1.1.1.1)
  4. Save changes and reboot the router if needed.

📌 Tip: If you’re unsure about your router login, check the label on the back or refer to the manufacturer’s website.

Step 5: Confirm It’s Removed

To confirm that CleanBrowsing is no longer being used:

  1. Visit: https://dnsleaktest.com or https://cleanbrowsing.org/what
  2. Run a Standard Test or check the CleanBrowsing status
  3. If CleanBrowsing doesn’t appear in the results, it has been successfully removed.
