This article assumes you have already configured your Netgear Orbi router to use the CleanBrowsing DNS service.
To block VPN at the network level, you will need to have administrative access to your home router. This article picks up inside the administrative panel.
Step 1: Navigate to Block Services
From the Orbi panel, navigate to the Block Service menu option.
Step 2: Add Services to Block
By default, the Block Service menu page will be empty. You will need to create new rules according to the specific protocols you want to block.
Netgear provides some prebuilt options for:
- VPN-IPSEC
- VPN-L2TP
- PPTP
These are found in the Service Type section by clicking the dropdown.
This is an example of what happens when I select the PPTP service type. You notice that the fields are automatically populated. Select Add.
You will need to add some of the other rules according to the specific VPN’s you’re concerned with. Learn more about what VPN protocols are and which ones to block.
Augment the pre-built options with options that better align with what you are working with.
This, coupled with the CleanBrowsing content filtering service will ensure that a) users can’t access VPN sites, and b) ensure that even if the app is already installed, they are unable to use it.
